Uncle George's Diet

Here's Tim's Story. He drives commercial semi on the interstate for a well-known freight company.

"Uncle George was the safest driver I ever saw. He taught me how to drive when I was 14 in Texas. He always emphasized safety and defensive driving, always used the turn signals, and always drove courteous.

"Uncle George drank a quart of whiskey every day. He called it his diet. Said he'd been doing it since he was a young-un, it was his 'diet' and if he ever quit his 'diet' he'd die.

"But even after a quart of whiskey, Uncle George was still the safest driver I ever saw. That whiskey didn't effect him the way it would you or me. Maybe he was used to it.

"But then when he was almost 75 years old, he drove down to the convenient store and a policeman was there on lunch and smelled the whiskey on Uncle George's breath and arrested him.

"Uncle George didn't have any money for a lawyer or a drunk-driving school or any of the other options they tried to sell him, so he ended up spending 10 days in jail, which is where he died.

"My guess is that they didn't have any whiskey in jail and he ended up quitting his 'diet'. Too bad. Nice fellow. Good driver."
